Human-Scale Design

Borrowing from Jane Jacobs and Christopher Alexander: systems, like cities, work when they are legible and lovable at the scale of a person.

Jane Jacobs watched sidewalks, not master plans. What made a street safe and alive was not a grand design but a thousand small, evidence-based patterns — eyes on the street, short blocks, mixed use, aged buildings.

Software has master planners too, and they make the same mistakes: cathedrals nobody can hold in their head, optimized for the operator and hostile to the person. Human-scale design asks the opposite question — not how do we control this, but how does a single person understand, trust, and change it?
